TRAINAIR® Respiratory Trainer

Project: A device to improve respiratory health and fitness

During 1980's and 1990's, researchers in the Respiratory Department of a South Wales Hospital were convinced that Respiratory Muscle Training would strengthen muscles in patients with severe lung disease.

Despite previous inconclusive studies, the Welsh team continued with their work developing a respiratory muscle training protocol, culminating in 1995 in the presentation of a paper to the International Conference of the American Thoracic Society. In this, they outlined their new technique and showed that RMT is effective if applied correctly.

The team carried out clinical trials based on their training protocol which proved to be even more effective than they had dared to hope. Not only significantly improving the quality of life of patients with cystic fibrosis and other serious lung conditions, but also improving the fitness and performance of healthy people and trained athletes.

Up to this point prototype equipment had been used. This was too bulky and costly for general use and required skilled medical supervision to achieve the desired results.

A commercially available, user friendly product that met with european medical standards was needed to exploit the new technique. This is where Project Electronics came in.

The decision to go ahead was made in August 1999 thus we assembled a team of 20 experts for the project; this included plastics designers, software programmers and electronics engineers.

In less than twelve months the TRAINAIR® was born!
