Return to The Design Process
Before going any further, and certainly before telling anyone about your idea, you must consider what, if any, protection you need from others 'stealing' your idea. If you are considering applying for a patent, you must not disclose the idea to anyone, unless they have entered into a legally enforceable Non-Disclosure Agreement or NDA.
For information about confidentiality, click on the button below.
It is important to establish whether there are any similar devices already available. If so, what advantages does your idea have which would distinguish it from the competition? Is there a real demand for this product? What selling price would make the product competitive but still profitable? (Remember that dealer mark-ups can be as much as 100%!) Knowing your market is a major factor in the eventual commercial success of the product.
Consider what standards the finished product is likely to need to meet. This will depend to some extent upon which countries the product will be sold in. For the UK and other European countries, CE marking is essential. In the USA, UL approval may be required.
If you are aware of the approvals required, you can specify them. Otherwise we can address this issue during the Consultation.
Now you need to draw up a list of requirements and consider what approvals you may need.
